On March 28, I shared out fun experience of heading to Houston ’s downtown oasis, Discovery Green Park where we found new friends and fun with the Egyptian community, happily celebrating new freedoms coming to the country. Lots of city fun.
When I checked Katy’s Facebook page that day, I found she’d managed to have fun too. Not city fun in Atlanta , where she lives. But little town fun! And that may be better.
After careful planning, she presented herself in her once-upon-a-time hometown of Blakley , Georgia , the self-proclaimed Peanut World Capital, on the best day of the year to visit. She took in the Peanut Parade with old cars, politicians, beauty queens, marching bands and lots, and lots, and lots of peanuts.
Weekends are great, and another one is just around the corner. What adventures await?

I need to get to your old haunts so I have a better picture. Glad Katy returned on the best day. Wonder if everything looked smaller than she remembered? And you were so smart to move near the heart of the city to be able to enjoy such diversity and celebratioin
The town looked smaller than I remember, that's for sure! But there is a new Walgreen's on one of the main drags! And lots of ridiculous yummy food. Bought some Mayhaw Jelly and a pound cake from the fine women of the Blakely First United Methodist Church!
Here's the scoop on Discovery Green. A great, fun place. http://houston.culturemap.com/newsdetail/04-12-11-best-park-in-america-discovery-green-beats-out-central-park-in-coolest-city-park-rankings/
I've never been to Houston. How did you meet your Egyptian friends? My husband called Egypt every day during the protests, but now things are back to 'more normal.'
The teen-agers and young men really did patrol the neighborhoods when the police were pulled off the streets during the uprising.
